Box Score SALISBURY, NC - The Newberry College women's tennis team faced a tough test against No. 9 Catawba on Wednesday afternoon, falling 4-0 in South Atlantic Conference action at the Johnson Tennis Center.
Despite the final score, the Wolves (10-4, 3-3 SAC) showed strong competitiveness throughout the lineup, highlighted by several tightly contested matches in both doubles and singles play.
In doubles, the pairing of Hazel Vernon and Lina Sarhan delivered a close performance at No. 2, battling to a 3-4 margin before the match went unfinished. Yui Suzuki and Renee Dorval competed at the top flight, while Aina Miralles and Margarita Roshka rounded out doubles action.
Singles play featured multiple hard-fought efforts for Newberry. At No. 4, Aina Miralles pushed her opponent in a competitive match, taking four games in the second set before the contest was halted.
Renee Dorval delivered one of the closest matches of the day at No. 5, claiming the first set 6-7 (tiebreak format) and responding with a strong 6-2 second set before the third set was left unfinished.
At No. 6, Hazel Vernon also turned in a strong showing, narrowly dropping a 5-7 first set in a tightly contested battle before her match was stopped.
Elsewhere, Margarita Roshka, Lina Sarhan, and Yui Suzuki each competed against a nationally ranked lineup, gaining valuable experience against one of the top teams in the region.
Newberry will face off against Lincoln Memorial University next on March 25th at the Oakland Tennis Center.Â
