Wolves Drop Close Conference Match to No. 19 Wingate, 4-2

NEWBERRY, SC - The No.25 Newberry Wolves women's tennis team dropped a hard fought conference matchup on Wednesday afternoon, falling 4-2 to No.19 Wingate at home.

Newberry found itself in an early hole after doubles play, where the Wolves were unable to secure the point. The pairing of Renee Dorval and Yui Suzuki fell 6-4 at No. 1 doubles, while Margarita Roshka and Aina Miralles were also defeated by the same score at No. 3. The No. 2 duo of Hazel Vernon and Lina Sarhan battled to a 5-5 tie before the match went unfinished.

In singles action, the Wolves showed resilience, picking up two victories and pushing another match to the limit. Hazel Vernon delivered a strong performance at No. 6 singles, earning a straight-sets win, 6-4, 6-4. Renee Dorval added another point for Newberry with a convincing 6-3, 6-4 victory at the No. 5 position.

Sarhan turned in one of the most competitive matches of the day at No. 2 singles, going toe-to-toe in a tightly contested battle that featured tiebreaks in both sets before ending unfinished.

Despite the effort, Newberry came up short in the remaining singles matches. Margarita Roshka fought through three sets at No. 1 singles after taking the opening set but ultimately fell. Yui Suzuki and Aina Miralles were also unable to find momentum in their respective matches.

The Wolves will look to bounce back as they continue conference play on March 21st when they take on Lenoir Rhyne in Hickory, NC.
