NEWBERRY, S.C. — The Newberry College women's lacrosse team dropped an 11–6 decision to Slippery Rock on Wednesday afternoon at Setzler Field. Newberry (5-5) saw a balanced scoring effort with six different players finding the back of the net, but Slippery Rock (7-0) used a strong second half to pull away.
The Wolves struck first in the opening quarter as Jadie Burns scored off an assist from Ella Todd to take a 1–0 lead. Slippery Rock responded with back-to-back goals to lead 2–1 after the first period. In the second quarter, Newberry continued to battle as Todd scored and assisted on another goal to help tie the game twice. Lana Howell added a goal to even the score at 3–3, but Slippery Rock closed the half on a 2–0 run to take a 5–3 lead into the break.
Newberry showed resilience in the third quarter, cutting the deficit to one on two occasions. Tunie Mullen scored off a Todd assist, and Shannon Creagh added a free-position goal to make it a 6–5 contest. However, Slippery Rock answered each time and carried a 7–5 advantage into the fourth. The Rock created separation early in the final period, scoring three quick goals to extend the lead to 10–5. Nicole DiNapoli added a late goal for Newberry, but Slippery Rock tacked on one more to secure the 11–6 win.
Ella Todd led the Wolves offensively with a game-high four points on one goal and three assists. Shannon Creagh and Lana Howell each recorded two points with a goal and an assist, while Burns, Mullen, and DiNapoli each added a goal. Defensively, Skylar Duval-Lewis contributed two ground balls and a caused turnover, while Madison Schiffbauer and Julia Zayachkowsky each collected two ground balls.
In goal, Presley Green turned in a strong performance with 15 saves while facing 42 shots. Newberry forced 14 turnovers but committed 23 in the contest. The Wolves return to South Atlantic Conference play on Saturday, March 21, traveling to face Emory & Henry at 4:30 p.m. in Emory, Virginia.
