BELMONT, NC- The
Newberry College women's lacrosse team battled hard on the road at
Belmont Abbey College but fell
10-8 in a tightly contested midweek matchup on Wednesday afternoon. Newberry jumped out to an early lead with two first-quarter scores and kept the pressure on through the first half, thanks in large part to a strong offensive start and solid transitional play.
After scoring the game's first goal unassisted, Ella Todd got Newberry on the board first, and Dakota Beasley followed with a goal assisted by Shannon Creagh to give the Wolves a 2-0 advantage after one quarter. Newberry continued its momentum in the second quarter with two goals from Lana Howell and a tally from Jadie Burns, putting the Wolves up 5-1 at intermission. However, Belmont Abbey responded with a strong third quarter, outscoring Newberry 6-0 to seize control of the contest. The fourth quarter saw Newberry cut into the lead with additional scores from Beasley, Riley Duchon, and Creagh, but Belmont Abbey held on for the 10-8 victory.
Newberry's offensive balance was evident, with Dakota Beasley and Lana Howell each scoring two goals, and additional scores from Burns, Creagh, Duchon, and Todd. On the stat sheet, the Wolves finished with 22 shots and 13 shots on goal. In transition play, Newberry managed 15 of 19 clears, showing poise in moving the ball out of its own end, though Belmont Abbey edged them slightly in possession opportunities. The Wolves' goalkeeper, Presley Green, faced heavy action throughout the game, recording 6 saves while allowing 10 goals in 60 minutes of work.
Newberry returns home this Saturday Feburary 28th to face Converse at 3PM
