NEWBERRY,SC- Newberry College men's basketball battled until the final buzzer Wednesday night inside Eleazer Arena but fell to Lenoir-Rhyne, 74-67. The Wolves trailed 37-33 at halftime in a tightly contested first half that featured constant momentum swings, and despite multiple second-half pushes, they were unable to overcome the deficit. The loss moves Newberry to 6-18 overall and 4-14 in conference play.
Houston Jones led the way offensively for Newberry with 18 points, knocking down four shots from beyond the arc and consistently creating scoring opportunities. Malakhi Stremlow added 11 points on an efficient shooting night, providing a steady presence in the paint, while Kayzzin McDowell chipped in 10 points and contributed key minutes on both ends of the floor.
The matchup was competitive throughout, highlighted by 12 lead changes and five ties as neither side could create much separation early. Newberry capitalized on defensive pressure, turning turnovers into 17 points on the other end, and received a strong boost from its depth with 27 points coming from the bench. The Wolves were especially efficient at the free-throw line, finishing an impressive 69.6 percent, which helped keep the contest within reach down the stretch.
The Wolves will hit the road to face Tusculum for a 4 PM tip-off on February 14th.
