HAMPTON, VA - The Newberry College Wolves men's wrestling team opened the 2026 Virginia Duals in dominant fashion, earning back to back dual victories to move on in the bracket. Newberry cruised past Muhlenberg College 37-9 in the opening round before securing a 24-14 win over MSU Moorhead in Round Two.
Round One: Newberry 37, Muhlenberg 9
Newberry wasted no time asserting control against Muhlenberg, piling up bonus points throughout the lineup.
At 125 pounds, Ricky Springs opened the dual with a major decision victory, setting the tone early. The Wolves followed with a big performance at 133 pounds, where Caiden Pelc earned a first-period fall before adding another win later in the dual to extend Newberry's lead.
The middle weights proved pivotal, as Cole McCullough picked up both a decision and a technical fall at 141 pounds, while Sebastian Melendez recorded a major decision at 149 to keep momentum firmly with the Wolves.
At 157, Matt Hoelke added a technical fall, and Bo Perkins capped off the stretch with a technical fall at 165 to put the dual out of reach.
Newberry's dominance continued in the upper weights, where the Wolves collected key decisions to close out the 37-9 victory and advance to Round Two.
Round Two: Newberry 24, MSU Moorhead 14
Facing a tougher test against MSU Moorhead, the Wolves leaned on timely wins and bonus-point performances to secure the victory.
At 174 pounds, Newberry grabbed momentum with a major decision, followed by a fall at 184 pounds to swing the dual in the Wolves' favor. J. Parker delivered at 197 pounds with a decisive win, and Rylan Madison added a crucial decision at 285 to keep Newberry ahead late.
Newberry closed out the dual with strong performances across the final bouts, holding off MSU Moorhead to earn a 24-14 win and remain unbeaten on the day.

With the two wins, the Wolves advance to Round Three of the Virginia Duals, where they will face Findlay University on Saturday. Newberry will look to continue its momentum as the tournament resumes.
