NEWBERRY,SC- The Newberry College women's basketball team delivered a determined and competitive performance in South Atlantic Conference play but narrowly fell to Wingate, 59–57, on Wednesday evening at Eleazer Arena. The Wolves move to
9–6 overall and 3–6 in SAC action, and the contest nearly went to overtime before Wingate converted a basket in the
final seconds of play to break the deadlock. Newberry set the tone early, leading after the first quarter and matching Wingate throughout the opening half, while staying within one possession for most of the night. The Wolves finished the game shooting
41.7 percent from the field and
38.9 percent from three-point range, reflecting strong offensive execution in a tightly played conference matchup.
Offensively, Marykate Kent led Newberry with 17 points, knocking down five three-pointers to provide consistent perimeter scoring. Rickell Brown turned in a complete performance with 13 points, seven assists, and five rebounds, controlling the tempo and creating opportunities on the offensive end. Leigha Harris anchored the Wolves inside, recording a double-double with 13 points and 10 rebounds while Jada Brown contributed strongly on the glass with eight rebounds, helping Newberry compete physically in the paint The Wolves continued to battle until the final buzzer, and despite the narrow outcome. The Wolves will be on the road to face Carson-Newman at 2PM.
