In the first match in program history, the Newberry College men's volleyball team opened its inaugural season with a 3–0 setback to Erskine College on Tuesday evening in Due West, South Carolina. The Flying Fleet claimed the victory by set scores of 25–14, 25–14, and 25–16.
Newberry showed flashes of promise in its historic debut. Lucas Nieves and Preston Anderson each recorded six kills to lead the Wolves offensively, while Alex Arbez added four kills. Setter Tibulo Smith led the offense with 18 assists in the first match of his collegiate career, helping Newberry total 22 kills as a team. Defensively, Brady Gilmore and Nieves shared team-high five digs apiece, and Nieves added three blocks to anchor the net presence for the Wolves.
The Wolves totaled four team blocks and showed improvement as the match progressed, closing the third set within single digits late.
The match marked a milestone moment for Newberry College, as the Wolves officially began competition as an NCAA men's volleyball program. Newberry will look to build on its opening performance as the program continues its inaugural season. The Wolves will face King University next on Friday at 6pm in Bristol, TN.
