NEWBERRY,SC- Newberry College men's basketball delivered a thrilling
82–72 overtime victory against Lincoln Memorial University in a
South Atlantic Conference showdown at Eleazer Arena, improving the Wolves to
7–7 overall and 3–5 in SAC play while the Railsplitters fell to
8–6 and 4–4 in league action. Newberry controlled much of the first half, shooting efficiently and using strong team defense to carry a
36–27 lead into halftime. The second half saw both teams battle back and forth, with momentum shifting repeatedly as Lincoln Memorial erased the early deficit and forced
overtime. The contest featured
12 lead changes and nine ties, underscoring just how evenly matched the two sides were through regulation.
In overtime, Newberry's poise and depth shined as the Wolves outscored the Railsplitters 18–8 to secure the win. Drake Downs led all scorers with 25 points, while Kayzzin McDowell added 16 points and provided energy on both ends of the floor. Malakhi Stremlow was instrumental in the victory, finishing with 18 points on 6-of-9 shooting and a perfect 6-of-6 from the free-throw line, adding 5 rebounds and 3 steals in 32 minutes of action. His physical play inside, timely mid-range finishing, and defensive activity helped the Wolves sustain offensive possessions and limit second-chance opportunities for Lincoln Memorial. Drew Robinson contributed 12 points with four assists, and Makhi Rivers chipped in 7 points and 5 assists, giving Newberry balanced scoring and playmaking throughout the game.
The Wolves finished with 50.9 percent shooting from the field, including 46.2 percent from three, and knocked down 75.9 percent of their free throws, showcasing efficient scoring that was especially decisive in the extra session. Newberry's resilience after relinquishing the second-half lead, combined with stellar individual performances and team execution in overtime.
