Wolves Host Catawba Tonight In Key Early Season SAC Showdown

Tonight the Newberry College Wolves (2-0) open South Atlantic Conference play at historic Setzler Field when we host Tusculum (2-1, 1-0) at 7:00 p.m.

Both teams are coming off victories with the Wolves rolling to a 49-0 non-conference victory over Point (Ga.) and Catawba which rallied from a 14-point deficit to score the final 24 points in a 44-34 win over UVA Wise.

The Wolves finished with 379 yards of total offense while holding the Skyhawks to just 90 total yards including seven yards rushing.

Six different Wolves scored touchdowns while the defense registered their first shutout since a 20-0 victory at UNC Pembroke on September 29, 2018 and the first shutout at Setzler Field since November 11, 2017 in a 28-0 victory over Mars Hill.

Catawba gained 648 total yards last week including 276 yards on the ground, 372 passing, compiled 32 first downs and dominated time of possession, holding the ball for over 41 minutes.

Wolves quarterback Reed Charpia and Catawba quarterback Preston Brown are two of the top quarterbacks in the SAC with each ranking in the top-5 in passing yards per game, completion percentage, efficiency and touchdowns.

Charpia leads the nation in completion percentage (86%) and efficiency (210.8) and is fourth in the SAC in yards per game (221 yards per game).

The Wolves defense, ranked third in fewest yards allowed per game (274.5) will face a stiff challenge in Catawba which comes into tonight's game averaging a league best 486 yards per contest.

In last year's game the Wolves jumped out to a 13-0 lead, Catawba scored three consecutive touchdowns to grab a 21-13 fourth quarter advantage, but the Wolves scored two touchdowns in the final eight minutes to win 27-21 in Salisbury.

Next week the Wolves travel to Lenoir-Rhyne for the Battle of the Bishop's Trophy.
