Tonight the Newberry College Wolves (1-0) open their home season at historic Setzler Field when we host NAIA program Point (Ga.) from West Point, Ga.

The Wolves are looking to improve to 2-0 for the first time since 2022 when the team started 4-0. 

Point is 0-2 with a pair of losses to fellow NAIA schools Faulkner (28-8) and LaGrange (36-14).

Newberry opened the season with an impressive 31-24 road conference win at UVA Wise.

Two touchdown passes from Reed Charpia, a 96-yard kickoff return for a score by Quez Spells and a goal line stand tackle by Jonathan Sexton on the Newberry two-yard with just under two minutes left in the game were key factors in the Wolves' season opening victory.

Tyleke Mathis and Devron Williams each had a punt return of at least 20 yards.

While UVA Wise outgained the Wolves in total offensive yards 459 to 276, the Wolves outgained the Highland Cavaliers 151-36 in return yards.

Middle linebacker Mikey Blandin and kicker Burke Nettles were named the South Atlantic Conference defensive and special teams Players of the Week.

Blandin racked up 21 total tackles (eight solo, 13 assisted), while adding 2.5 tackles for loss that pushed the Cavaliers back four yards. He also broke up two passes in the victory.

Nettles averaged 48.2 yards on five punts which included a 55-yard punt from the shadow of the Wolves end zone with just over a minute left in the game. His net punt average was 47.4 yards per boot. He also had five touchbacks on six kickoffs and made his only field goal attempt of the game, a 24-yard field goal late in the second quarter to tie the game at 17.

He also made all four of his extra point attempts.

The Wolves will be back at Setzler Field next Saturday night when we host Catawba in a South Atlantic Conference game.
