ST. AUGUSTINE, FL – The Newberry College volleyball team continued its perfect start to the season with a statement victory Friday afternoon. The Wolves rallied past four-time defending GMAC champion Ashland 3-1 (21-25, 25-22, 26-24, 25-20) at the Flagler Invitational.
After dropping the opening set, the Wolves regrouped behind a strong offensive attack. Evie Paalman led the team with 13 kills and 15 digs, while Anna Schneider added 13 kills and 13 digs of her own. Carole Ann Hussey chipped in six kills on a .308 hitting percentage, and setter Annie Dill guided the offense with 24 assists.
Defensively, the Wolves were rock solid with nine team blocks. Hailey Clayworth led the back row with 16 digs and also added a service ace, while Madison Watson and Samantha Shaffer combined for nine block assists.
With the win, Newberry improves to 4-0 on the season, taking down an Ashland squad favored to win the GMAC again this year. The unbeaten run also marks the Wolves' best start to a season since 2015, when they opened the year 3-0.
The Wolves will continue the Flagler Invitation Tournament with two games tomorrow vs. Lees-McRae and host Flagler at 2pm and 6pm.
