Wolves Drop Midweek Slugfest to Mount Olive

Newberry pounded out 13 hits and scored 11 runs, but it wasn't enough in a 16-11 non-conference loss to Mount Olive at Carolina Bank Field in Florence.

Luke Compton and Cooper Gentry, the top two hitters in the Wolves lineup, combined for six hits, three runs scored, and three runs batted in to lead the Newberry attack.

After falling behind 4-0 after an inning and a half, the Wolves rallied for six runs in the bottom of the second inning to grab a 6-4 lead.

K.J. Leshko and Compton hit back-to-back two run doubles to tie the game, followed by an error to give the Wolves the lead and capped off the rally on a run-scoring single by Kade Faircloth.

The Spartans responded by scoring five runs in the third to grab a 9-6 advantage.

Wilson Wages singled in a run in the fourth to cut the lead to 9-7, but Mount Olive retaliated with two runs in the sixth and another in the eighth.

Newberry climbed closer with an error to score one run and a run scoring ground out by Faircloth in the eighth to make it 13-9.

Mount Olive tacked on three runs in the top of the ninth but the Wolves kept fighting as Carson Vega delivered a leadoff, pinch-hit home run followed by three straight singles to load the bases.  Gentry's fielder's choice plated the final run before the rally ended.

It was Vega's first college home run; Wages extended his hitting streak to eight games and Compton had his best offensive performance since returning the lineup two weeks ago after missing a  month due to injury.

The loss dropped the Wolves to 20-19 and they will return to action Friday afternoon in Emory, Va. to take on Emory & Henry in the first of a three-game road SAC series.
