WISE, VA – A late rally fell short as the Newberry Wolves dropped the opening game of their weekend series against UVA Wise, 6–4, on Friday afternoon at Stallard Field.

Newberry collected seven hits on the day and struck first with three runs in the top of the first inning credited to Wilson Wages' bases-clearing double. UVA Wise responded with two runs of their own to swing momentum. The game stayed quiet until the eighth inning when Wise plated four more runs in the bottom frame. The Wolves rallied, being down 6-3 in the ninth, but fell short despite Wages' solo home run.. This is the second time Wages has homered in the last two games.

On the mound, Wyatt Carey took the loss after allowing four earned runs in the eighth inning. Chansen Cole had a strong start for the Wolves tossing 6.0 innings and nine strikeouts while holding the Cavaliers to just two runs. The bullpen kept the game within reach, but UVA Wise's late offensive rally push proved enough to take game one.

The Wolves will regroup for the series deciding doubleheader at 1pm and 4pm on Saturday.
