Late Push Falls Short as Newberry Men’s Lacrosse Drops Regular Season Finale to #7 Anderson

NEWBERRY, S.C. – Under the lights at Setzler Field, #13 Newberry men's lacrosse delivered a determined effort against one of the top teams in the nation. Despite a four-quarter fight and a strong second-half push, the Wolves fell 16-13 to No. 7 Anderson in their regular season finale on Wednesday evening.

Newberry (10-6, 7-3 SAC) came out with urgency, trading goals with the Trojans in a high-paced opening quarter that ended tied at 4-4. Anderson (12-3, 9-1 SAC), however, took control in the second, outscoring the Wolves 3-0 to take a 7-4 lead into halftime.

The Wolves didn't back down. They clawed their way back in the third quarter, finding key offensive moments and generating stops on the defensive end. Shane Halliwell led the charge with two goals and two assists, including a man-up goal that capped a surge midway through the third.

Derek Caiazzo capitalized on his chances, scoring twice on two shots, while Jonny Maclean contributed a goal and two assists. In all, seven different players found the back of the net for Newberry, showcasing the team's offensive depth.

Defensively, Jack Travassos anchored the back line with 10 ground balls and four caused turnovers. In goal, Ben McMullen turned aside 14 shots across nearly three quarters of action, and Nolan Downey added four more saves in relief.

Newberry's transition game remained a strong suit, going a perfect 21-for-21 on clears. The Wolves recorded 36 total shots, with 25 on target, and converted one of three extra-man opportunities.

Despite outscoring Anderson 6-5 in the second half, Newberry couldn't fully close the gap after the Trojans' decisive third quarter, where they poured in five goals to hold off the comeback bid.

The Wolves finish the regular season with a 7-3 record in South Atlantic Conference play. Newberry sits at the #4 seed and will face the Bulldogs of Wingate.
