NEWBERRY, S.C. – In a high-stakes South Atlantic Conference matchup, the Newberry women's lacrosse team delivered a strong performance on their home turf, defeating Anderson 12-10 on Wednesday afternoon at Setzler Field to wrap up the regular season.
The Wolves opened the contest with poise, netting three goals in the first quarter to establish a 3-1 lead. Serena Elias led the early charge, scoring twice in the opening frame—including a free-position goal—while Emma Jobs added a strike to give Newberry early control.
The second quarter turned into a shootout, with both teams trading goals in a fast-paced stretch. Lana Howell energized the home crowd with back-to-back goals in quick succession, and Elias completed her hat trick before the break. Despite a surge from the Trojans that included six goals in the frame, Newberry maintained an 8-6 advantage at halftime.
After the break, Newberry leaned on its special teams and defensive execution. Trysten Burns and Elias each added third-quarter goals, both coming on woman-up opportunities. That efficiency on the power play proved critical, as the Wolves stayed one step ahead of the Trojans.
In the final quarter, Jobs struck again just over a minute in, and moments later, she assisted on a goal by Burns that gave Newberry a four-goal cushion. Anderson managed to close the gap with a goal at the 10:30 mark, but the Wolves defense tightened and held firm through the final whistle.
Elias finished with a game-high four goals, including three on free-position shots. Jobs and Burns scored two apiece, with Jobs also dishing out an assist. Howell recorded two goals, while Dakota Beasley added a goal and an assist.
Newberry was sharp on special teams, going 5-for-6 on free-position attempts and converting all five of their power play chances. The Wolves totaled 31 shots—24 of them on goal—and goalie Mackenzie Dorr turned in a stellar outing with 18 saves.
With the win, Newberry improved to 12-5 overall and 9-2 in South Atlantic Conference play, while Anderson dropped to 10-7, 8-3 SAC.
The Wolves now shift their focus to host the SAC Quarterfinals scheduled 4PM.
