NEWBERRY, SC - In a fast-paced and competitive matchup, the Newberry Wolves women's lacrosse team secured a 19-15 victory over the Belmont Abbey Crusaders at Setzler Field. The win marks the Wolves' fifth of the season, improving their record to 5-1.
Senior attacker Serena Elias and junior midfielder Emma Jobs led the charge for Newberry, each netting four goals in the victory. Amelia Hawkes added a hat trick, while Dakota Beasley and Mackenzie Watson each contributed two goals. Trysten Burns recorded two assists to help fuel the offensive outburst.
The game was a back-and-forth affair through the first half, with Belmont Abbey holding a narrow 4-3 lead after the first quarter. However, Newberry responded in the second, scoring six goals to take a 9-9 tie into halftime.
In the third quarter, Newberry started to separate themselves, outscoring Belmont Abbey 5-3 behind goals from Elias, Jobs, and Beasley. The Wolves carried that momentum into the fourth quarter, where they put the game away with five more goals, including crucial scores from Watson, Elias, and Beasley.
Goalkeeper Mackenzie Dorr made 10 saves, providing key stops in crucial moments to keep Newberry ahead. The Wolves' defensive unit also capitalized on Belmont Abbey's 15 turnovers, while Newberry excelled on clears, going a perfect 15-for-15. Their efficiency and discipline allowed them to maintain control in the closing minutes.
The wolves will compete next on March 8th against Tusculum University at 4pm in Greeneville, TN.
