Newberry Splits Road Doubleheader Against UVA Wise

WISE, VA – The Newberry Wolves earned a hard-fought split against UVA Wise on Wednesday, taking game one with a 6-4 victory before falling 4-3 in game two. The Wolves showed off clutch hitting in their win, while a late comeback attempt in the later game came up just short.

Game One: Newberry 6, UVA Wise 4

The Wolves offense came alive with 10 hits, striking early with two runs in the second inning and adding another pair in the fourth and two final runs in the sixth. Maddy Staples and Bethany Pigg both drove in two runs a piece while Mady Brown drove in a run to take the lead in the sixth. Katie Henri sparked the offense, going 3-for-4 with a triple and three runs scored.

On the mound, Lindsey Foster (8-8) went the distance once again, tossing a complete game while allowing four runs on 11 hits, striking out seven. She worked out of several jams to keep UVA Wise's scoring at bay and secure the win.

Game Two: Newberry 3, UVA Wise 4

The Wolves were held scoreless through six innings before mounting a comeback with three runs in the seventh that just fell short. Staples and Henri kept their momentum going into game two, each picking up two hits. Brown added an RBI groundout to cut the deficit late.

In the circle, Natalie Wescott started for the Wolves, allowing three runs on five hits over 2.1 innings. Samantha Minick provided strong relief, pitching 3.2 innings while allowing just one run on three hits.

The Wolves will work off this split and prepare for the Saturday road doubleheader vs. Erskine College at 1pm and 3pm.
