WINGATE, NC - The Newberry College women's lacrosse team came close to an upset win over #19 Wingate. uUltimately falling 13-12 in a dramatic seven-period thriller at Irwin Belk Stadium.
The Wolves (6-3, 3-1 SAC) dominated the first three quarters, building a commanding 11-4 lead entering the fourth period. Amelia Hawkes spearheaded Newberry's offensive charge with five goals, including two pivotal strikes in the second quarter that extended the Wolves' advantage.
Newberry's fast start saw Serena Elias and Hawkes each score early to give the Wolves a 2-0 lead. After Wingate responded to tie the game, Trysten Burns ignited a second-quarter surge that included three consecutive goals from Hawkes. The Wolves entered halftime with a 7-3 advantage, and further strikes from Mackenzie Watson, Burns, and Scythe Shephard in the third quarter pushed their lead to 11-4.
However, Wingate (9-1, 4-0 SAC) roared back in the fourth quarter, outscoring Newberry and sending the game into overtime. Despite several defensive stands in overtime, Newberry couldn't hold on. Wingate netted the game-winning goal for the Bulldogs with 52 seconds left in the seventh period to seal the victory.
Mackenzie Dorr delivered a stellar performance in goal for Newberry, recording 21 saves to keep her team in contention. Newberry's aggressive defense forced 11 turnovers, with Shephard contributing two caused turnovers and five draw controls.
The Wolves will return home this Saturday to face off against Catawaba College at 12pm.Â
