Newberry Falls in Nail-Biter to Embry-Riddle Despite Strong Start

SAVANNAH, GA - The Newberry Wolves fell just short in a thrilling matchup against Embry-Riddle (FL), dropping a narrow 11-10 decision at Memorial Stadium. Despite a strong offensive push and several standout performances, the Wolves couldn't overcome a late rally by the Eagles.

Newberry stormed out of the gates with a commanding first-quarter performance, scoring four unanswered goals. Ayden Snow netted back-to-back goals, both assisted by Ace Nichols, before William Fitzsimmons and Liam Vollans each added goals, with Gage Vigar providing assists on both plays. Embry-Riddle responded with two late goals in the first quarter, cutting Newberry's lead to 4-2.

The Wolves maintained momentum early in the second quarter, as Tristan Nicholson fired in a goal, and Ace Nichols found the net with just one second left before halftime, giving Newberry a 6-3 lead at the break.

The Wolves' lone third-quarter goal came from Nichols, briefly tying the game at 7-7 before the Eagles surged ahead. Entering the final frame trailing 8-7, Newberry kept pace thanks to goals from Matthew Duarte, Vigar, and Nathan Pouliot, with Vigar playing a key role as both a goal-scorer and playmaker.

The Wolves held a narrow 10-9 lead late in the fourth quarter, but Embry-Riddle came back in the final three minutes to secure the 11-10 victory.

Nichols and Vigar led Newberry with four points each. Nichols recorded two goals and two assists, while Vigar added one goal and three assists. Snow contributed two goals, while Duarte, Pouliot, Fitzsimmons, Nicholson, and Vollans each added one.

Goalkeeper Ben McMullen made an impressive 19 saves, keeping the Wolves in contention throughout the match. The Wolves will look to bounce back when they return to action next week.

The Wolves will play at home next on March 15th at 1pm against Emory and Henry University.
