Chansen Cole was brilliant in his second collegiate start and
Braiden Eagen earned the save as the Wolves beat Wayne State (Mich.) 4-2 in game two to earn a split in Saturday's doubleheader after dropping the opener 11-9.
With the win Newberry improved to 6-1 and will look for the series victory Sunday afternoon with a single nine-inning game at 12 noon at Smith Road Complex.
Cole struck out 11 and walked none in 6 innings to improve to 2-0 on the season.
After giving up a solo home run in the first and a run on three hits in the second, he scattered three hits over the next four innings and struck out nine over the final four innings to earn the win.Â
Newberry only picked up two hits in the nightcap but took advantage of six walks three hit batters and two Wayne State errors to plate four runs.
With the score tied at 2-2 in the fifth the Wolves loaded the bases on two walks and hit batter. Â Lance White drove in a run with a sacrifice fly and
Chandler Mims drove in the fourth run on a ground out.
Eagen earned his first save by striking out two of the four batters he faced in the seventh inning to record the save.
In the first game, Newberry made an uncharacteristic four errors that led to three unearned runs but rallied late to nearly catch the Warriors.
Trailing 11-6 heading into the bottom of the ninth,
Keillor Osbon was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded to score one run,
Luke Compton singled in a second run and Mims grounded out to drive in a third run to cut the deficit to 11-9.
The Wolves had runners on second and third with one out but failed to push across another run.
Nine different players had hits for the Wolves in the opener with Mims and
Wilson Wages each driving in a pair of runs.
