WINGATE, N.C. – The Newberry Wolves put forth a strong defensive effort but fell to Wingate 60-40 on Wednesday evening at Cuddy Arena. With the loss, Newberry moves to 5-16 overall and 4-12 in South Atlantic Conference play.
Newberry trailed 27-19 at halftime after a tough second quarter in which they managed just six points. The Wolves were led by
Jess Tomkins, who scored a team-high 16 points on 8-of-12 shooting while adding six rebounds and four blocks.
Julia Paoletta contributed eight points, including two three-pointers, while
Caylin Moment added six points off the bench.
Defensively, Newberry recorded six blocks and six steals, with Tomkins leading the way. The Wolves also secured 37 rebounds, including nine on the offensive glass.
Newberry returns to action on Saturday, February 8, as they face the Eagles of Carson-Newman for a 2:00 PM tipoff.
