TIGERVILLE, SC – Despite facing a tough North Greenville squad on the road, the Newberry Wolves showed resilience throughout both games of their doubleheader on Wednesday. While the Wolves fell 10-2 in game one and 6-3 in game two, they continued to create scoring opportunities and battle at the plate. Haidyn Campbell, Leah Evans, and Payton Little provided key offensive contributions, while the defense settled in during the later innings of Game 2.
Game One: Wolves 2, Trailblazers 10 (5 Innings)
Newberry broke through in the fifth inning, scoring two runs off of a passed ball and a Taylor Palfrey RBI single, to avoid the shutout.
Evans went 1-for-2 with a run scored, helping get Newberry on the board.
Brooke Hodges doubled down the left field line and scored in the fifth inning off Palfrey's single.
Campbell added a hit and anchored the defense with eight putouts at first base.
Game Two: Wolves 3, Trailblazers 6
Newberry struck first with a run in the first inning off a fielder's choice from Evans.
The Wolves battled back with two runs in the fifth, cutting into the deficit and keeping the game competitive.
Campbell went 1-for-2 with an RBI, reaching base twice with a walk and a hit-by-pitch.
Little added a sacrifice fly, driving in one of Newberry's two fifth inning runs.
The speed of Palfrey scored two of Newberry's three runs.
The Wolves played an error-free game and turned in 14 assists, showing an improved defense.
The Wolves will build off this doubleheader when they face Chowan in a three-game series at home. Game one will be on Friday (Feb. 28) with a Saturday (Mar. 1) doubleheader at 12pm and 2pm.
