NEWBERRY, SC - In a fiercely contested match up at Setzler Field, the Newberry Wolves mounted a thrilling fourth-quarter comeback but fell just short against Lander, 7-6.
Despite a strong defensive effort and standout goalkeeping from Mackenzie Dorr, who recorded 17 saves, Newberry (3-1) couldn't quite close the gap as Lander (4-1) capitalized on key opportunities to secure the narrow victory.
After the first goal was scored by Lander, the Wolves responded minutes later when Scythe Shephard found the back of the net to tie the game at 1-1. The tightly contested first half saw both defenses dominate, with neither team able to break through in the second quarter.
Coming out of halftime, Lander took control, extending the visitors' lead to 4-1. However, Newberry's Lana Howell answered with two clutch goals in the third quarter to bring the Wolves within one, 4-3, heading into the final frame.
The final quarter saw an intense exchange of goals. Lander extended its lead to 6-3, but Newberry refused to go down without a fight. Dakota Beasley and Amelia Hawkes each scored to trim the deficit to one with just over three minutes remaining.
With the home crowd rallying behind them, the Wolves pressed forward, responding with a goal from Emma Jobs in the final minute, but time ran out on their comeback attempt.
The Wolves will look to bounce back in their next match against UVA Wise on March 1st in Wise, VA.
