Box Score Freshman sensation
Chansen Cole, the reigning South Atlantic Conference Pitcher of the Week, spun another gem to lead the Wolves (7-3, 1-1) to a 4-0 win in game two and earn a split of Friday's SAC opening doubleheader.
Cole allowed no runs on just one hit and struck out 15 over six innings of work to improve to 3-0 on the season.
His 15 strikeouts tied for the third most in Newberry College history and was the most for a Wolves pitcher since Josh McElwee struck out 15 against Wingate on March 9, 2012.
Cole lowered his earned run average to 1.58 and has struck out 29 batters over 17 innings this season.
He got out of a jam in the second inning, inducing a double play with one out and the bases loaded to end the Pioneers only threat of the game.
Cole struck out five consecutive batters from the final hitter of the third inning through the first batter of the fifth and four consecutive from the last out in the fifth to the first three batters in the sixth.
Newberry plated two runs in the first inning one on a throwing error after a double steal and a run scoring single by
Jonathan Velez.
The Wolves added two insurance runs in the sixth as Velez led off the inning with a double,
Luke White delivered a run scoring single, and
Chandler Mims drove in the final run on a fielder's choice.
John Rollings worked a scoreless seventh inning to secure the victory.
In the opener, senior
Ethan LeBron had another solid start, allowing just three runs on five hits over six innings, but Tusculum outscored the Wolves 6-0 over the final three innings to earn a 9-5 victory.
The Pioneers broke open a close game with three runs in the top of the ninth.
Bryson Knuckles had three hits,
Cooper Gentry drove in three runs,
Anthony Plotkin added two hits, scored two runs and drove in a run and
Kade Faircloth added two hits and drove in a run to lead the Newberry offense.
The two teams will wrap up their three-game conference series with a single nine-inning game Saturday at 1:00 p.m. at Smith Road Complex.
