Reed Charpia Named Finalist For Harlon Hill Trophy

Wolves quarterback Reed Charpia is one of eight finalists for the Harlon Hill Trophy.

The award is given to the individual selected as the most valuable player in NCAA Division 2.

Charpia was voted as a finalist from Super Region 2.

Charpia is the 2025 first team All-South Atlantic Conference quarterback and Offensive Player of the Year.

His 3,386 yards passing and 279 completions are Newberry College single-season records, and his 28 TD passes are tied for the school record.

In his first year as the fulltime starter, he has transformed the Wolves from a team that posted a combined 7-14 record and the 11th best pass offense in the league the last two seasons to a league title, the top passing offense in the conference, a program tying 11 victories (11-1), a current 9-game winning streak (2nd longest in school history) and the deepest run into the NCAA playoffs (quarterfinals) in program history.

In five games against teams ranked in the top 10 in Super Region 2 he averaged 327.4 yards passing per game with 16 touchdowns and a 71.4 completion percentage.

In two NCAA playoff games he has thrown for 704 yards and 5 touchdowns including a 416-yard, 2 touchdown performance in the Wolves 24-17 win over #9 West Florida.

Newberry is 8-0 in one score games with Charpia throwing the game winning touchdown pass in the fourth quarter or overtime four times, all against teams ranked in the top ten in the region, two of which went to the playoffs (Wingate, West Florida, Carson-Newman, Emory & Henry).

In two other games he led game winning drives that culminated in field goals with under 25 seconds remaining that won the game.

In the fourth quarter and overtime Charpia has completed 81.4% of his passes (70-86) for 950 yards, 10 touchdowns and just one interception.

Newberry has outscored their opponents 111-72 in the fourth quarter this year.

He did not throw an interception the final five games of the regular season and had a streak of 204 passes thrown without an interception.

In the game winning drive against Lenoir-Rhyne Charpia completed all four of his passes for 57 yards which led to the game winning field goal as time expired.

He rallied the Wolves from down 21-0 against Wingate to win 43-42 in overtime.  On the game tying drive in regulation and game winning drive in overtime he completed 6-of-7 passes for 104 yards for two touchdowns including the game tying touchdown with 54 seconds remaining in regulation and the touchdown and winning two-point conversion pass in overtime.

In the conference title clinching game against Carson-Newman he completed 7-of-9 passes for 161 yards and two touchdowns in the fourth quarter including the game winner with 1:48 left in the contest.

He rallied the Wolves from down 21-7 to Emory & Henry and completed all three of his passes in the fourth quarter for 42 yards and a score in the 36-34 victory.

In Saturday's second-round playoff victory at #9 West Florida, Charpia completed 7-of-11 passes for 110 yards in the fourth quarter including the game winning touchdown with 4:55 remaining in the game.

Against Anderson he completed all nine of his passes in the fourth quarter for 129 yards and a touchdown with his final completion setting up the game winning field goal with 23 seconds left.

Newberry is averaging 31.9 points, 286.1 yards passing and 385.1 total yards per game after averaging just 18.9 points, 115.8 yards passing and 288 yards per game over the previous two seasons.

Charpia is the third Newberry College player to be named a finalist for the award.  Mario Anderson was a finalist in 2022 and Raleigh Yeldell in 2016.

The sports information directors at the 159 NCAA Division II football-playing institutions nominate and vote on the award.

The winner of the 2025 award will be announced on Friday, December 19.

The Hill Trophy is named for the late Harlon Hill - the former University of North Alabama standout - who excelled with the Lions from 1950-53 before going on to fame in the National Football League with the Chicago Bears.
