NEWBERRY, S.C. – The second-ranked Newberry College field hockey team continued its unbeaten run with a dominant 6–2 victory over Wingate in the South Atlantic Conference Tournament semifinal on Friday afternoon at Setzler Field.
After a scoreless first quarter, Wibien Dahmen broke through in the second with the opening goal to give the Wolves a 1–0 lead at halftime. Newberry erupted for three goals in the third period, as Lieke Varenkamp and Dahmen each found the back of the cage before Finet Heemskerk added another off a Dahmen assist.
In the fourth, Emma Hulsmeyer extended the lead with a goal assisted by Payton Keeler, and Emma Westbrook capped off the scoring to seal the 6–2 win.
Ayanda Mangenah anchored the defense with two saves in the cage, while Newberry outshot Wingate 28–5 on the day. Following the game, junior forward Payton Keeler was recognized as the South Atlantic Conference Elite 23 Award winner, honoring her for excellence in academics and athletics.
With the win, Newberry (17–0) advances to the SAC Championship Game, set for Sunday, November 9, at 1 p.m. on their home turf at Setzler Field, as Newberry serves as the tournament host site.
