Wolves Close Game On 8-0 Run To Earn 59-51 Season Opening Victory

The Newberry College women's basketball team closed on an 8-0 run over the final 2:11 to beat Barton College 59-51in the season opener at the Conference Challenge Tournament in Augusta.

Rickell Brown scored six of the points during the run while also grabbing two rebounds and coming up with a steal to spark the Wolves to their victory.

Brown finished with a career-high 21 points, seven rebounds, three steals, two assists and a blocked shot.

Marykate Kent made four3-point field goals and scored 12 points while Leigha Harris added 10 points.

It's the Wolves first season opening victory since the 2019-20 season.

After struggling offensively in the first half, the Wolves bounced back to shoot nearly 58% from the floor in the second half after making just under 23 percent of their shots in the first half.

The Wolves led at the end of every quarter, 12-10 at the end of the first quarter, 23-21 at the half, and 42-39 at the end of the third quarter.

The game featured eight ties and six lead changes.

Newberry's biggest lead was 22-10 midway through the second quarter, but the Bulldogs went on a 11-1 the rest of the quarter to cut the Wolves lead to two at the half.

Barton grabbed their first lead of the game 29-27 with 6:49 left in the third quarter, but the Wolves scored five of the last seven points of the quarter to maintain their lead heading into the final stanza.

Newberry forced two turnovers and missed three-point shots over the final two minutes to seal the victory.

The win avenged a 51-48 season loss to Barton a year ago.

The Wolves will close out the Conference Challenge Tournament Saturday at 1:30 p.m. against North Greenville as Newberry looks to start the season 2-0 for the first time since the 2018-19 season.
