Wolves Rally To Win Miraculous Overtime Thriller To Give Todd Knight His 100th Career Victory

Wolves quarterback Reed Charpia threw a seven-yard touchdown pass to Keith Desaussure in overtime and then the two connected again on the two-point conversion to give Newberry College (4-1, 3-1) a pulsating 43-42 overtime victory over Wingate (3-2, 1-2) at Setzler Field.

Newberry rallied from down 21-0 late in the second quarter and then rallied again at the end of the game from a 35-28 deficit as Charpia completed a pass to Kenmane Brunson who rumbled into the end zone from 19 yards out on third and 12 with 54 seconds left in regulation to tie the game at 35 and send it to overtime.

Wingate scored on their only possession of overtime to grab a 42-35 lead, but Charpia set up the Wolves overtime touchdown by scrambling for 16 yards to the Bulldog seven-yard line.

The win was the 100th career victory at Newberry College for Todd Knight, who is in his 17th season as head coach and improves his record to 100-76.

Charpia finished with 413 yards passing, the eighth best in Newberry College history and the most yards passing in a game since Newberry College Hall of Famer Raleigh Yeldell passed for 428 yards against  Lenoir-Rhyne in 2016.

His six touchdown passes is one short of the school record and tied the second-best mark set by Josh Stepp against Catawba in 2005.

Charpia completed 34 of 46 passes for six touchdowns and one interception, his first of the season.  His 34 completions are the fifth best in Newberry College history and the most since Yeldell's 35 completions in the same game against Lenoir-Rhyne in 2016.

Charpia finished with 428 yards of total offense, Desaussure finished with 11 catches for 107 yards and a touchdown, his sixth touchdown catch of the season.

After trailing 21-0 late into the second quarter, Charpia led the Wolves on an 8-play, 77-yard touchdown drive that culminated with a 7-yard touchdown pass to tight end Gray Leaphart.

The Wolves had to overcome five penalties on the drive to score the touchdown with 25 seconds remaining at the half to crawl within 21-7 at the break.

Newberry  then scored touchdowns on their next first three possessions of the second half as Charpia hit running back Quez Spells who turned a short pass into a 29-yard touchdown to cut the advantage to 21-14 and just over four minutes later, hit Rico Dorsey, Jr. for a 17-yard scoring strike to tie the game at 21 with 2:09 left in the third quarter.

Linebackers Devron Williams and Jamar Blandin combined to force and then recover a Wingate fumble at the Bulldog 34-yard line with 13 seconds left in the third quarter and the Wolves took advantage.

Charpia and Desaussure provided a foreshadowing of what was to come when they connected on a 15-yard completion on fourth and 11 from the Wingate 35-yard line to keep the drive alive.

Three plays later Charpia connected with Dorsey on a 10-yard scoring pass to give the Wolves their first lead of the game, 27-21 with 12:40 left in the fourth quarter.

Wingate rallied back to score the next 14 points to grab a 35-28 lead with 6:17 left in regulation.

After the two teams traded punts, the Charpia-Desaussure duo came through again as they hooked up on a 45-yard completion to the Wingate 17-yard line with just over two minutes left in the game to set up the game tying score three plays later.

Wingate drove 42 yards in 43 seconds to set up a potential 50-yard game winning field goal that fell short to send the game into overtime.

Each team had 24 first downs, the Wolves finished with 479 yards of total offense to Wingate's 463 yards.

Newberry was just 4-of-12 on third down, but two for two on fourth down.

Wingate built their 21-0 lead by outgaining the Wolves 279-60 before Newberry rallied for their only scoring drive just before the end of the first half.

But in the third quarter, the Wolves' defense rallied, allowing only one first down as Newberry held the ball for just over 11 minutes, outscored Wingate 14-0 and outgained them 183-8.

Linebackers Blandin (10) and Williams (8) and safety Jalen Stradford (5) combined for 23 total tackles, one forced fumble, one fumble recovery and two tackles for loss.

Newberry is tied with Catawba in the South Atlantic Conference standings at 3-1, one half game behind first place Emory & Henry at 4-1.

The Wolves travel to Tusculum Saturday.
