Westbrook’s Four-Goal Outing Leads Newberry Past Converse to Stay Perfect

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The Newberry College field hockey team continued its dominant start to the season with a commanding 6-1 victory over Converse on Sunday afternoon at Weisiger Stadium. The win moves the Wolves to 8-0 overall and 4-0 in South Atlantic Conference play, while the Valkyries fall to 7-3 (4-2 SAC).

Emma Westbrook delivered a career performance, scoring four goals to power the Wolves' offense. Westbrook opened the scoring just four minutes into the contest off a feed from Parker Keeler, who was electric in distribution with four assists on the day.

Westbrook struck again in the second quarter before Converse broke through to make it 2-1 heading into halftime. In the third, Lieke Varenkamp extended Newberry's lead off an assist from Payton Keeler, and from there, the Wolves dominated play.

Newberry erupted for three goals in the final frame — two more from Westbrook and one from Mia Pancoast in the closing minute, sealing the 6-1 victory. Zoe Barker and Parker Keeler added assists during the late surge as Newberry outshot Converse 26-5, including a 19-4 advantage in shots on goal.

In the cage, Ayanda Mangenah earned the win, stopping two shots while the Wolves' backline held Converse scoreless in the second half.

With her standout effort, Westbrook now owns 45 career goals and 11 assists, totaling 94 career points across 61 career games for the Wolves.

The Wolves will look to keep their unbeaten streak alive when they return home on Tuesday, October 8th, to take on Lincoln Memorial at 4 p.m. at Setzler Field.
