Wolves Host Bulldogs Saturday Night In Key SAC Showdown

Tonight the Newberry College Wolves (3-1, 2-1) host the Wingate Bulldogs (3-1, 1-1) in a key South Atlantic Conference contest.

The Wolves are coming off a heart-pounding 20-17 victory over Lenoir-Rhyne as Burke Nettles nailed a 27-yard field goal as time expired to give the Wolves the win.

Jamar Blandin tripped up Bear quarterback Khamoni Robinson a half a yard short of a first down on fourth down at the Wolves 33-yard line with 2:30 left in the game and the score tied at 17.

Wolves' quarterback Reed Charpia engineered an 8-play, 66-yard drive to set up the game winning score.  Charpia was a perfect 4-for-4 for 57 yards on the game winning drive.

He finished the night with 199 yards and two scores, Quez Spells led the rushing attack with 67 yards on six carries while Charpia chipped in with 61 yards on seven carries.

Devron Williams returned to the Wolves lineup and led the defense with eight tackles while Jaden Kinard added seven tackles including one for loss and recovered and forced a fumble.  Blandin finished with six tackles and three quarterback pressures.

Charpia has completed nearly 69 percent of his passes with seven touchdowns and no interceptions this season.  He is only one of two Division 2 quarterbacks to throw at least 100 passes without an interception.

Desaussure has already caught 24 passes for 282 yards and a SAC leading five touchdowns.

Wingate is coming off a 21-14 home field loss to Carson-Newman.  The Bulldogs had just 241 yards in the loss.

The Bulldogs averaged just over 43 points and 464 yards per game in defeating UVA Wise, Bluefield State and UNC Pembroke before Saturday's loss.

In 35 previous meetings, the two programs are nearly even with Wingate holding an 18-17 advantage after last year's 38-0 win at Wingate last year.  The Wolves have won seven of the last 11.

Newberry travels to Tusculum next week before returning home to host Mars Hill for homecoming.
