NEWBERRY, SC – In a contest that began over a month ago and resumed Wednesday evening, the Newberry women's soccer team fell 2-0 to Tusculum at Smith Road Complex in South Atlantic Conference play. With the result, the Wolves move to 5-5-3 overall and 1-5-2 in SAC action.
The first 15 minutes of the match were originally played on September 20th before severe weather forced a suspension. Play resumed Wednesday starting from the 15:00 mark. Tusculum struck once in each half, scoring in the 26th minute and converting a penalty in the 78th minute to seal the result.
Despite the scoreline, goalkeeper Madison Gutierrez turned in another strong performance between the posts, making six saves to keep Newberry within reach. Haylee Patino led the Wolves offensively with three shots, while Sydney Gusewelle and Natalie Ruiz added shots on target as Newberry continued to battle until the final whistle.
Newberry matched Tusculum with five shots on goal and earned three corner kicks, but could not break through the Pioneer defense.
The Wolves will face Catawba on the road this Saturday at 5pm as they get closer to the end of the regular season.
