With the regular season winding down, tonight's matchup between the Wolves and the Wasps is a critical game in determining the possible South Atlantic Conference champion.

The Wolves (6-1, 5-1), ranked #24 in this week's D2Football.com poll, are riding a four-game winning streak and lead the Wasps (6-2, 5-2) by half a game in the SAC standings.

Newberry extended its winning streak to four games with a 38-24 Homecoming victory over Mars Hill while the Wasps had their four-game winning streak snapped at their Homecoming game against Wingate, falling 27-20 to the Bulldogs.

Quez Spells became the first player in Newberry College football history to have a rushing, receiving and kickoff return of 80 yards or more in one season when he caught a swing pass and turned it into an 82-yard score in the first quarter last Saturday.

The previous week he had an 84-yard touchdown run in the win at Tusculum and had a 96-yard kickoff return for a touchdown in the season opening win at UVA Wise.

Wolves quarterback Reed Charpia completed 23 of 37 passes for 291 yards and a touchdown, and receiver Keith Desaussure caught 10 passes for 113 yards in the win over Mars Hill.

For Desaussure it was his third consecutive game with at least 100 yards receiving and ten catches.  He now has 56 catches for 645 yards and seven touchdowns on the season.

Charpia now has 1,852 yards passing with 16 touchdowns and one interception while completing nearly 70 percent of his passes.

Emory & Henry won last year's game here in Newberry, 27-7 in the season finale for both teams.

The previous two meetings went the way of the Wolves with Newberry winning 26-23 in overtime in Virginia in 2022 and in an epic, 8-overtime game 25-23 in 2023 at Setzler Field.

Next week the Wolves travel to Anderson for a first-ever meeting with the Trojans at 4:00 p.m.
