NEWBERRY, SC – The Newberry College men's soccer team showed grit in the final minutes to earn a 2-2 draw against Wingate Wednesday night at the Smith Road Complex. With the result, the Wolves move to fifth place in the South Atlantic Conference.
The Wolves struck first in the 31st minute when Denys Bekhvandi powered through the left side of the box and fired a shot that slipped past the keeper to give Newberry the early 1-0 lead.
Wingate rallied late in the second half, scoring twice in a four-minute span to take a 2-1 lead in the 89th minute. But the Wolves refused to quit. Just 21 seconds after falling behind, Newberry earned a penalty kick opportunity, and George Rathmill came up clutch, netting home the equalizer to tie the match at 2-2 in the 90th minute.
Defensively, Josh Momodu and Brayden Martinez anchored a strong back line effort, while goalkeeper Charlie Clark finished with five saves to keep the Wolves in the match. Newberry outshot Wingate 13-11, including eight shots on goal, and earned six corner kicks on the night.
The Wolves return to SAC play this weekend as they face Emory & Henry at home at 7pm on Saturday night.
