BLUFFTON, SC - The Newberry College men's and women's cross country teams turned in strong performances at the 2025 Sand Shark Invitational on Saturday morning, highlighted by junior Tyler Shumate earning All-Invitational Team honors with a top-10 finish.
Shumate led the way for the Wolves in the men's 8K race, placing 7th overall with a time of 25:38.8, securing his spot among the event's elite runners. His effort helped guide Newberry to a 6th-place team finish out of 13 teams, narrowly behind several strong regional programs.
Behind Shumate, Drew Benson crossed the line in 27:31.3, followed by Larry Scott (27:45.2), Camden Longdon (27:56.3), and Braylon Reier (28:37.2) to round out the Wolves' scoring five. Sullivan Smith also contributed a solid effort with a 30:35.0 finish.
On the women's side, the Wolves placed 7th out of 13 teams in the 5K race, paced by sophomore Olivia Hare, who clocked a time of 19:26.5 to finish 20th overall. Freshman Cassidy Bouchard was close behind at 20:27.6, followed by Addison Howle (21:09.3), Cristina Calidonio (21:13.4), and Kwamia Russell (21:49.6). Anna Johnson (23:27.5) and Gaby Darazi (23:32.4) rounded out the top seven for Newberry.
The meet featured a competitive field of regional NCAA Division II and NAIA programs, providing a valuable tune-up for the Wolves ahead of postseason competition.
Both teams will return to action at the South Atlantic Conference Cross Country Championship on October 25th in Greenville, TN.
