#7 Newberry Wolves Winning Streak Comes To An End Against #9 UMO Trojans

Mount Olive, NC-- On September 28th, the Newberry Field Hockey team, with a record of 6-0 overall and 3-0 in the South Atlantic Conference, faced off against the UMO Trojans, who entered the game at 5-2 overall and 4-1 in conference play. Despite their strong start to the season, the Wolves were unable to secure a victory, marking their first loss of the year.
 
In the first period of the game, the Wolves and the Trojans matched each other closely for the first ten minutes, demonstrating strong defenses and tactical play. However, at 12:51, the Trojans broke the deadlock with the first goal of the match. Kaat Kooper found the back of the net, assisted by Amber Dercksen, setting the tone for the rest of the game. Transitioning into the second period, the Trojans quickly extended their lead at 20:13 when Nakai Nujaranji found the back of the net, assisted by Annefleur Moerkerken. This goal marked a crucial moment in the game, further shifting the momentum in favor of UMO, now making the score 2-0.  The Wolves were able to collect two saves during the first half of the game but UMO collected 3. 
 
In the third quarter, the Trojans extended their lead just 50 seconds in when Jule Schuurman found the back of the cage, assisted by Derckesen, bringing the score to 3-0. Shortly after, Jemimah Kriechelberg quickly added a fourth goal with an assist from Rosie Migounoff. In the final moments of the game, at the 59:45 mark, the Wolves managed to score their first point with Payton Keeler finding the net, assisted by Tamsin Bangert. The match concluded with a score of 4-1 in favor of the Trojans
 
Overall, despite the score, the Wolves managed to put up a strong fight, recording nine shots compared to the Trojans' eleven. Both teams were evenly matched in terms of saves, each earning three. The Wolves also held an advantage in penalty corners, earning six to the Trojans' five. This statistical performance highlights the competitiveness of the game, even if the final score did not reflect it.

The Wolves will compete again at home, Tuesday, October 1st against LMU at 6pm.
