Mansfield, PA— On Saturday (September 21
st) the Wolves competed against 10
th ranked Mansfield at Slippery Rock, Pennsylvania. Wolves' field hockey (5-0 overall, 3-0 South Atlantic Conference) defeated home team Mansfield (4-2 overall) by a final score 3-2 in a shootout. This marks the Wolves fifth victory of the season following by a road win against Belmont Abbey.
With tenacious defense, the Wolves restricted the Mountaineers to only 11 shots across the first four periods. In contrast, Mansfield's defensive unit held the Wolves to a limited five shots during that same stretch.
During the first period, Mansfield's offense capitalized by scoring the first two goals. Leah Toskey opened the scoring at the 3:50 mark with an assist from Jenna Duke, followed shortly with another goal from Jenna Duke, assisted by Carli Eberly at the 6:28 mark.
Kyla Cooke, the senior goalkeeper, played a pivotal role in the first period by making two crucial saves, helping to solidify the Wolves' defense.
In the second and third periods, both teams tightened their defenses, making it difficult for either side to find offensive momentum. The Wolves found a spark in the fourth period, scoring two goals in quick succession.
Tamsin Bangert scored at the 53:13 mark, followed by
Emma Westbrook, who found the net at 54:58, tying the game at 2-2.
As the game entered overtime, both teams stood firm. Newberry took three shot attempts, but Mansfield countered with two effective blocks. With neither side able to score during overtime, the teams headed into a shootout. The Mountaineers missed all their attempts, while the Wolves missed their first and third. Bangert scored on the Wolves' second attempt, and
Stembile Chikoore scored on the fourth attempt, clinching the victory for the Wolves with a 2-0 shootout win.
With five consecutive wins, the Wolves will continue their road trip, facing Slippery Rock (September 22th) at Mihalik-Thompson Stadium at 12 PM.
