Five Run First Propels Newberry To Bracket 1 Championship

HARTSVILLE, S.C. – The Newberry College baseball team scored five runs in the bottom of the first in route to their 8-1 victory over the seventh seeded Eagles of Carson-Newman Saturday morning at Tom J. New Field on the campus of Coker University.
 
With the win, the Wolves will move on to the championship scheduled for tomorrow at 12:30 p.m. against an opponent to be determined.
 
Junior infielder Jomar Lugo continued to drive in runs with a three RBI performance while going 2-3. Senior first baseman Henry Gibson went 2-4 with a double and two RBIs.
 
Hunter French went 5.2 innings with two strikeouts, throwing 94 pitches to 25 batters. Senior righty Jonathan White got a solid two innings in relief as he struck out one and held the Eagles to no runs.
 
In the bottom of the first, the Wolves poured on five runs to take a early lead starting with Gibson's first rbi as he singled to center driving in Donovan Ford to take a 1-0 lead. On the next at-bat, Kade Faircloth would single through the left side to bring in Jacob LeBron to make it 2-0. Two batters later, Jomar Lugo would get two of his three RBIs with a two-run double to make it 4-0. The fifth run in the first would come from a RBI groundout from Chandler Mims to take a 5-0 lead.
 
After the Eagles would score their lone run in the third inning, the Wolves would respond as Gibson would get his second RBI with a double to left center field that would score Ford to make it 6-1.
 
The Wolves would score their seventh and eighth runs as Lugo and Bryson Nuckols would get hit by pitches with the bases loaded to make it 8-1.
 
With the first two batters reaching with back-to-back hits, Wyatt Carey would shut down the Eagles and leave runners on first and third to give the Wolves an 8-1 win.
