NEWBERRY – For the second year in a row, the Newberry College men's lacrosse team advanced to the South Atlantic Conference tournament semifinals after beating Anderson 20-14 at Setzler Field on Saturday night in the quarterfinal round.
With the win, the 4-seed Wolves will pay a visit to undefeated and top-seeded Limestone on Wednesday afternoon (April 24) in a 3:00 faceoff in Gaffney.
Leading the pack tonight was
Baker Westmoreland with his second six-goal game of the season.
Miles Jones scored four times, and
Jimmy Osorio and
Scott Reed each had two.
Curtis Bukta,
Ethan Canning,
Shane Halliwell,
Jonny MacLean,
Mac Ryan and
Zach Thompson all scored once.
Brian Lake,
David Squires and
Jack Travassos caused two turnovers apiece on the defensive side of things, with Squires and Travassos scooping up three ground balls, and Lake, two.
Newberry (12-3) and Anderson (7-9) played a tight, back-and-forth first half that saw the score read 7-6 at halftime. Westmoreland bookended the half for the Wolves and among the goal-scorers in the first 30 minutes was Bukta with the 100th of his career with 4:31 remaining in the second quarter.
After the Trojans tied it at 7-all 1:40 into the second half, Newberry got a tinge of breathing room with goals a minute apart from Jones and Westmoreland – who completed his hat trick 3:35 into the third quarter.
Another AU goal brought them back within 9-8 before Halliwell and MacLean made it 11-8 midway through the third. The Scarlet and Gray fired home two more over the remainder of the period – Reed and Westmoreland were the goal-getters – to bring the lead to 13-9 heading into the final stanza.
In that final stanza, Newberry outscored Anderson 7-5 to put the game out of reach. For the game, the Wolves converted 5 of 7 man-up opportunities to stay atop Division II in the category. In net,
Ryan Erler improved to 12-3 with a 19-save effort on 33 shots (.576).
