HARROGATE, Tenn. – After getting off to a rollicking 8-0 start in the first quarter, the Newberry College men's lacrosse team beat host Lincoln Memorial 16-7 on Saturday afternoon.
Newberry (10-3, 5-3 SAC) picked up its second straight win and sixth in a row over Lincoln Memorial (4-11, 1-8 SAC) after besting them in the SAC quarterfinals a season ago.
The Wolves were led by
Scott Reed's six goals on eight shots. It's the sixth game this season Reed has scored as many or more goals and he now has 60 through 13 games.
Ethan Canning registered his first hat trick of the season, and seven other Wolves scored once:
Curtis Bukta,
Shane Halliwell,
Miles Jones,
Jonny MacLean,
Nathan Pouliot,
Zach Thompson and
Baker Westmoreland.
Pouliot got the scoring underway 2:15 into the game. Halliwell followed 32 seconds later and Westmoreland 33 seconds after that for a 3-0 lead four minutes into the outing.
Sam Parent fed Reed for his first of the day with 9:06 left in the first before Jones made it 5-0 Newberry halfway through the opening quarter. Reed added goal No. 2 after Westmoreland found him 15 seconds later, and Canning netted his first of the afternoon for a 7-0 advantage with 3:06 left.
Bukta scored his 99th career goal just before the conclusion of the first to stake the Scarlet and Gray to a dominant 8-0 margin. Canning completed his hat trick with two quick goals in the second stanza for a 10-0 lead.
MacLean got on the board with the Wolves' 11th goal with 12:30 to go in the opening half but the Railsplitters scored three unanswered to bring their deficit back down to eight at 11-3.
Reed also finished off his hat trick with three minutes to go in the half to make it 12-3 Newberry at the intermission.
LMU trimmed its deficit to 12-5 a few minutes into the second half, though Reed scored his fourth midway through the quarter to restore an eight-goal advantage. After the Railsplitters scored again, Westmoreland assisted Thompson on his lone goal for a 14-6 Wolves lead heading into the fourth and final quarter.
Reed scored twice over the final 15 minutes while LMU added another for the final tally.
Ryan Erler earned his 10th win of 2024 in net as he stopped 12 of 19 shots (.632).
Connor Bates won 12 of 17 faceoffs (.706) in the circle.
Newberry finishes the regular season on the road this Wednesday (April 17) against Anderson. Faceoff is scheduled for 7:00.
