HICKORY, N.C. - Women's tennis losses tight conference battle against Lenoir-Rhyne 3-4.
Doubles started off hot for the Wolves, seeing two out of the three pairs win, claiming their first team point. Court #3 finished first for the Wolves with the dominant squad of
Sofia Cardenas and
Aina Miralles. Cardenas and Miralles kept the streak alive, taking the set in 6-3. Court #1 solidified the team point for Newberry with the veteran duo of
Ish Singh and
Rosie Harfield. Singh and Harfield also were victorious with a 6-3 play, sending the team into singles leading 1-0.
In usual fashion, court #5 featuring Miralles earned the Wolves their first singles point of the afternoon. After a respectable 6-3 first set, Miralles made short work in the second with a dominating 6-0 finish. Harfield earned her first singles win of the season today on court #6. Harfield started her first set off the same as court five with a 6-3 win. Keeping the momentum going, Rose handed the Bears another loss, with a smooth 6-1 finish. Court #2 is where the wire was brought down to. Cardenas had a difficult first set, dropping 3-6. In the second set the victor was decided via tie breaker. Pushing the set all the way to 16 points, Cardenas had a valiant effort yet heartbreaking 9-7 loss.
The Wolves continue their conference play this Saturday, March 23. at Catawba starting at 1 P.M.
