Men's Lacrosse Sets Program Record for Goals in 27-5 Win over Tusculum

Newberry also sets points record with 44, and margin of victory (22 goals)

NEWBERRY – Scoring a Newberry-record 27 goals and recording a program-high 44 points as a team, the Newberry College men's lacrosse team routed visiting Tusculum 27-5 at Setzler Field on Saturday evening. The 22-goal win is also the largest margin of victory in the seventh year of the program.

Scott Reed scored seven goals for the second time this season to move to 26 through five games.

Mac Ryan had three goals for Newberry (5-0, 1-0 SAC) while seven other Wolves scored a pair: Ethan Canning, Shane Halliwell, Miles Jones, Jimmy Osorio, Colby Rogers, Zach Thompson and Baker Westmoreland.

Derek Caiazzo and Bailey Phillips scored their first collegiate goals and Judah Kennedy tallied his first of 2024 and the second of his career.

Defensively, David Squires caused an impressive four turnovers and grabbed three ground balls, and Jack Travassos caused three with five ground balls.

Scoring got underway in a hurry, though it was Tusculum (0-5, 0-2 SAC) who struck first just 17 seconds in. Rogers answered in no time off the ensuing face-off, streaking downfield for the equalizer eight seconds later.

Reed and Canning scored the next two goals before Ryan netted three in a row over a four-minute stretch to give the Wolves a 6-1 lead halfway through the opening quarter.

Halliwell scored his first with 5:29 to go in the first with the assist credited to Reed who found the back of the net for the second time four minutes later for an 8-1 advantage.

Adrian Channell assisted Thompson with a minute to go and Halliwell fired home his second of the evening 18 seconds before the second quarter to make it 10-1 Newberry.

Canning kept the pack running with his second two minutes into quarter No. 2. Reed's third came a minute later but was followed by a six-and-a-half minute scoring drought for both sides. Thompson ended the scoreless stretch with help from Ryan to push the Newberry margin to 12, 13-1.

Reed made it four for the game with 1:45 left in the first half and once again, Rogers scored off the next face-off for a 15-1 lead. With little time left before halftime – three seconds to be exact – Reed scored his fifth for Newberry's 16th straight goal and a 15-goal lead at the break.

Jones scored his first goal of the game and third of the season to open the second half scoring 30 seconds in. The Pioneers broke the Wolves' 17-0 stretch with 11:46 left in the third to make it 17-2.

Reed's sixth came a minute later from Osorio while TU scored two in a row for an 18-4 score midway through the third quarter.

Jones' second and Osorio and Westmoreland's first each gave the Wolves a 21-4 lead heading into the fourth. In that final quarter, Westmoreland passed off to Phillips who scored his first goal as a Wolf with 13:18 left to play.

Five minutes later, Reed closed his book with his seventh and final goal – a man-up goal – followed by man-up goals from Osorio and Westmoreland. Westmoreland scored the Scarlet and Gray's 25th of the night to set the new program record.

Kennedy and Caiazzo sandwiched goals around the Pioneers' last of the night for the final tally.

For the game, the Wolves outshot Tusculum 65-21 overall and 42-13 on goal. Newberry won 29 of 36 faceoffs and grabbed 53 ground balls versus 15 for the visitors. Connor Bates had 12 of those and Rogers, eight. Goalkeeper Ryan Erler stopped four of the five shots he faced to earn the win in net for a 5-0 start to the campaign.

Newberry returns to Setzler Field for the third consecutive Saturday next weekend (March 9) for a date with the University of Indianapolis. Faceoff is scheduled for 2 p.m.
