SALISBURY, N.C. - Women's lacrosse moves to 3-1 in the conference after defeating Catawba 16-6. Nine Wolves score with two getting a hat trick.
Cassell Richardson and
Emma Jobs led the Wolves in scoring today with three a piece. Richardson also recorded an assist, finishing the game with four points.
Ella Todd tied Richardson in points with four as well, registering two goals and two assists.
Among the nine Wolves scored were Richardson, Jobs, Todd,
Serena Elias,
Hanna Bond,
Marissa Plumer,
Heather Johnston, Keilie Saylors and
Lana Howell.
Catawba managed to strike first in the match, waking up the Wolves to get their game going. Five minutes into the game, Elias put Newberry on the board from a
Trysten Burns assist. Two minutes later, Bond tallied her only goal of the game with a Todd assist. Catawba tied the game up which sent the Wolves on a four goal run. Saylors took it to the house all by herself to get the run started. While man-up Plumer finished the first period off with an assist from Bond, putting Newberry up 4-2.
Richardson opened up the second half for the Wolves with yet another Todd assist. The scoring run came to an end after Jobs found her first from an assist off of Howell. Trading goals, with five minutes left in the first half, Elias got her second goal of the day. A heated last minute minute in the half resulted in Johnston finding her first goal off the assist by Richardson with 45 seconds remaining. With six seconds left, Richardson decided to send the Wolves into halftime howling, scoring an unassisted door step dump. Wolves up 9-4.
A slow start to the third put Catawaba one goal closer to Newberry. Halfway through the period, Plumer managed to end the drought off a man-up goal. Richardson added to the lead one minute later on a Elias assist. The final goal of the period came off a rebounded scoop and score for Todd with one minute remaining in the period. Wolves still lead 12-6.
The fourth period was all Wolves, scoring four unanswered by Howell, Todd and two by Jobs. Goalie
Cheyenne Jess had a save early in the period during a free position shot, the remaining three shots from Catawba went wide.
The second period saw a season high five saves by Jess, while only allowing two goals. On 14 shots on goal, Jess saved eight of them. The teams defense stepped up yet again, picking up 23 ground balls and causing 12 turnovers.
Marin Paulenko and Plumer led the team in caused turnovers, while
Morgan Parsons,
Kaitlyn Mason,
Adriana Hart,
Madalyn Messersmith,
Scythe Shephard,
Mackenzie Watson, Jobs, Bond and Todd all caused one.
The Wolves will be back in action at home against Limestone on Saturday, March 23 at 1 P.M.
