NEWBERRY, S.C. - Women's lacrosse opens their 2024 season against the Cougars of Young Harris College tomorrow, Feb. 10th at 1 P.M.
Prior to the start of the season, the wolves were selected second in the preseason coaches poll, trailing the reigning South Atlantic Conference champions, Wingate University. Along with this, five wolves were given preseason all conference honors. Cassel Richardson,
Madalyn Messersmith and
Marissa Plumer were all recognized in the first team, followed by
Ella Todd and
Emma Jobs in the second team.Â
Last season Newberry made it to their first championship in program history led by now three year head coach
Tommy Kelly. Kelly also led the wolves to a record breaking 13 win season, boasting another record breaking 13.68 goals per game. The wolves have encountered the cougars in the past, falling to them 10-11 in the season opener last season.
Young Harris has already started their season as 1-1. Most recently the cougars fell to Anderson 7-19, after defeating Mars Hill 24-3.
