GREENEVILLE, Tenn. – Competing in their third road game in a week, the Newberry College men's basketball team fell to Tusculum on Saturday afternoon, 73-62.
Newberry (5-13, 4-9 South Atlantic Conference) had a trio of players score 12 points:
James Lovorn,
Booker Cusaac and
Drake Downs;
Caleb Byrd had 11.
Booker – whose scoring output was a career-high – tied for the team lead in rebounds (7) with
Jalen Johnson.
The Wolves found themselves down 13-6 about seven minutes into the game but soon trimmed the deficit to 13-10 with 11:32 remaining in the opening half.
Tusculum's (9-10, 7-6) lead was down to two, 20-18, after a pair of free throws from Lovorn with 6:35 left.
Devario Sheppard's layup brought Newberry within a point four minutes later before the Pioneers took a 33-28 lead into halftime.
Newberry narrowed its deficit to three points a few minutes into the second half but Tusculum extended the lead to 11 with 13:38 to play in the game.
That advantage grew to a game-high 17 points with five minutes left, though the Wolves outscored the hosts 17-11 the rest of the way for the final score.
On the glass, the Wolves grabbed 18 offensive rebounds – their second most in a game this season; the most (20) came in their first matchup versus Tusculum. Those rebounds led to 17 second-chance points compared to 8 for the Pioneers. The Wolves' bench also outscored Tusculum's 23-21.
Newberry returns home to Eleazer Arena on Wednesday (Feb. 7) for a battle with Catawba. Tip is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
