Men's Golf Ties for 2nd at Spring Bulldog Clash

Tom Hull (-1) ties for 9th individually

PAWLEYS ISLAND, S.C. – After the third and final round at the Spring Bulldog Clash at Caledonia Golf & Fish Club, the Newberry College men's golf team tied for second place at one-over par for the tournament.

Host Barton College won the event by a mere two shots over Newberry who tied with Columbus State. Lander and Shorter were tied for fourth place one stroke back of the Wolves and Cougars. The event featured seven of the top 23 teams in the country: No. 1 North Georgia; No. 5 USC Aiken; No. 11 Lander; No. 17 Columbus State; No. 21 Coker; No. 22 Lenoir Rhyne; and No. 23 Barton.

"This event was much needed for this team," Head Coach and Director of Golf Howard Vroon said of the tournament. "The team has been working hard and not seeing much in terms of results. Seeing these results will inspire them to continue doing the work necessary to be great. I was very impressed with how they carried themselves and how they played this week."

Tom Hull put together rounds of 69-73-67 on the par-70 course to finish at -1 in a tie for ninth on the individual leaderboard. Hull had nine birdies and an eagle throughout the week and led the field in par-5 scoring at seven-under.

Herman du Plessis finished at +3 in a tie for 25th after carding rounds of 69-74-70. du Plessis tallied seven birdies over his three rounds, three of which came this afternoon.

Javier Borrego Martin also tied for 25th at three-over after shooting 69-73-71. Borrego Martin led the Wolves in par-4 scoring for the week (-1) and in birdies (10).

Josh Greig saved his best for last with a three-under 67 today following a 70 in the first round and 78 in the second to finish five-over in a tie for 37th. Greig had six birdies during the tournament and a pair of eagles on the par-5 8th in the first and third rounds.

Benny Fischer's trio of rounds was 75-69-74 to score +8 for the tournament with four birdies.

Reflecting on the week, Coach Vroon said, "There were many highlights. One that stands out is Josh Greig, a redshirt sophomore, making his debut in the Wolves' lineup and shooting 70 (E) in his first round. Then he finished up the tournament with 67 (-3) today. Well done Josh."

Coach Vroon continued: "Tom Hull, a junior captain, continues to mature as a player and lead the team week in and week out. He holed out a 25 yard bunker shot on his last hole today for 67, and I was lucky enough to be there to see it.  We take Tom's leadership for granted but I am deeply appreciative of him and his commitment to our program.

"Both Javier (sophomore) and Benny (junior captain) made 3s on the signature hole at Caledonia, the par 4 18th, which plays over water and was into the wind today. And Herman had his share of highlights, including a 5 metal for his second shot from 267 yards on the par 5 second hole to 15 feet, and chipping in on the par 4 5th hole for 3. All of this brought us to within 2 shots of the lead as we tried to come back on Barton from 11 behind to start the final round. And we made things pretty tight in the end. Very exciting. Well done Wolves."

Newberry returns to the course next Monday and Tuesday (March 4 and 5) for the Lander Bearcat Classic at Greenwood Country Club.
