NEWBERRY – At home for the second-to-last time in 2024, the Newberry College men's basketball team fell to Anderson 97-67 on Wednesday night in Eleazer Arena.
Drake Downs had his second career double-double with 21 points and 10 rebounds to lead Newberry (6-16, 5-12 SAC).
Caleb Byrd added 15 points with four made 3s, three assists and four steals on the defensive end.
Devario Sheppard sank 5 of 9 shots (55.6%) and made a free throw to finish with 11 points to give the Wolves three players in double figures.
Anderson (14-11, 9-8) raced out to a 14-7 lead four-and-a-half minutes into the game. Downs then went on a 7-2 run of his own to bring the Wolves within 16-14 with 13 minutes left.
Booker Cusaac poured in five straight points to give Newberry its first lead of the game, 23-22, four minutes later. The Trojans scored 11 of the game's next 12 points to take a 33-24 lead at the 5:36 mark before going into halftime up 44-31.
AU extended its lead early in the second half and the Wolves were unable to mount a rally from there.
For the game, Newberry outscored Anderson 30-26 in the paint and the home bench outpaced the Trojans by a 22-10 margin.
Newberry will host Lincoln Memorial this Saturday (Feb. 24) on Senior Day. Tipoff is scheduled for 4 p.m. in Eleazer Arena.
