Track and Field Has Final Tune-Up Before SAC Indoor Championships at USC Indoor Open

COLUMBIA, S.C. – The Newberry College track and field team competed at the USC Indoor open on Saturday and several athletes enjoyed success.

Irma Watson-Peréz – last week's South Atlantic Conference Women's Indoor Field Athlete of the Week – finished second in the weight throw with a 17.21m heave. She still sits atop the SAC Indoor Performance List in the category.

Parker Pitts, Kegan Crowell and Randy Flores took spots 3-5 in the men's weight throw. Pitts' throw was 15.63m, Crowell's 15.44m and Flores' was a new career-best at 14.48m.

"Fantastic effort across the board," Head Coach Mashario Morton said of the meet. "This is the type of effort and energy we expect to see out of our athletes leading into Conference Championships."

Newcomer Rahyme Christian finished fourth in the 60m hurdles in 8.03 seconds and hit the National Qualifying Mark. He currently sits T-26th in Division II and second on the SAC Indoor Performance List for the event.

Sarah Abumere – last week's SAC Women's Indoor Track Athlete of the Week – set a new career record in the 60m dash with a 7.61-second performance. She also finished fifth in the 200m dash in 24.88 seconds.

Kevin Kipkosgei took home a second-place finish in the 5000m run. Kipkosgei shattered his previous personal best time, running it in 15:47.41. Josie Langtry likewise set a new personal record in the women's 5000m event with a time of 20:58.89.

"What an amazing day of performances for our program!" Jimmy Stephens, Director of Track and Field/XC, said. "So proud of these coaches and athletes; Multiple school records, multiple athletes jumping up in the conference and national rankings. We are peaking at the right time and ready to make some noise at Conference next week."

Concluded Coach Morton: "We have over 30 athletes in scoring range which is the most we have ever had in program history. Our coaching staff has done a phenomenal job preparing our athletes this season. Our game plan is simple this week. It is all about fine tuning, execution, and finishing what we started."
