Wolves Swept By Bulldogs in Saturday Twibill.

NEWBERRY – The Newberry College baseball team (2-8, 0-3 SAC) fell at home to the Bulldogs of Wingate (6-4, 3-0 SAC) in Saturday afternoon's doubleheader by scores of 13-7 and 10-6.
 
The Wolves will travel to Tigerville Tuesday afternoon for a non-conference game against the no. 2 ranked Crusaders of North Greenville University.
 
Game One.
The Wolves fell behind early in the first inning when Wingate tacked on four in the top of the first to take a 4-0 lead. The Wolves would cut that lead to 4-1 with a rbi single from Jacob LeBron.
The Bulldogs would extend their lead with the long ball as they added on three runs in the second and third to make it 7-1.
The Wolves would add a run to cut the Bulldog lead to 7-2 with a K.J. Leshko rbi single in the bottom of the fifth. In the next half inning, the Bulldogs would add on three runs to make it 10-2.
The Wolves would respond in the bottom half of the sixth with a rbi single from Henry Gibson to make it 10-3.
The Wolves would add four runs in the bottom of the seventh inning starting with a base loaded walk from LeBron. In the next at-bat, Hunter French would get hit by a pitch with the bases loaded to bring home the second run. Gibson would drive in the third run of the inning as he would reach on a fielder's choice. The fourth run of the seventh inning was driven in on an rbi single from Kade Faircloth to cut the Bulldog lead to 11-7.
The Bulldogs would add two more runs in the eighth and ninth innings to secure the 13-7 win.
Game One Key Wolves
  • Senior right fielder Jacob LeBron would go 2-3 with two rbis and a double.
  • Junior left fielder Kade Faircloth and freshman shortstop K.J. Leshko both had a team high of three hits on the afternoon. Faircloth went 3-4 with a rbi. Leshko went 3-5 and tacked on a rbi as well.
  • Senior right hander Matias Marchesini threw 3 2/3 innings striking out five batters
Game Two.
The Wolves and Bulldogs would both exchange a run in the first inning. Donovan Ford would lead off the bottom of the first with a triple to right center field. Two batters later, Ford would steal home while Jacob LeBron would get caught in a run down trying to steal second to tie the game up at one.
 
In the second the Wolves would take the lead with rbi singles from Leshko and Ford to take a 3-1 lead.
Two innings later, the Wolves would add three more as Ford would get his second triple of the day along with two more rbis on an identical triple to right center to drive in Jesse Free, and Faircloth to make it 5-1. On the next at-bat, Luke Compton would drive in Ford with an infield single to make it 6-1.
 
The Bulldogs would score nine unanswered runs in the fifth and sixth, holding on to a 10-6 win to secure the series and doubleheader sweep.
 
Game Two Key Wolves
  • Donovan Ford went 3-4 with three rbis two triples, two runs and a stolen base for the Wolves on the offensive end.
  • Hunter French went 5 innings in his first career start for the Wolves, striking out three batters.
