Jess Tomkins, the reigning South Atlantic Conference WePlayed Sports Player of the Week, continued her outstanding play with 25 points, seven rebounds and two blocked shots but it wasn't enough as the Wolves saw their two-game winning streak ended with a 71-57 loss to Catawba at Eleazer Arena.
Catawba led 37-30 at the half and stretched the lead to 17, 58-41 with 39 seconds remaining in the third quarter.Â
The Wolves rallied to cut the lead to eight points, 62-54 on a layup by Tomkins with 3:21 left in the game, but that is as close as Newberry could get. The Wolves held Catawba to just 2-of-11 shooting in the fourth quarter.
Newberry held Catawba to just 42 percent shooting and forced 17 turnovers.
In her last six games, Tomkins is averaging 21.7 points, 8.3 rebounds and nearly two blocked shots per game. She is also shooting 61.7% from the floor and 77.8% from the free throw line.
Ryian Howard and
Marykate Kent each added eight points for the Wolves.
Newberry is now 5-8 overall and 4-5 in the South Atlantic Conference.
The Wolves will take a break for the Holidays before traveling to Clinton for an exhibition game against Presbyterian on December 31
